Textfree is a great app. while in Japan I was able to screw over the Goj by avoiding redicously high texting prices by not using my carrier for roaming. Take that Japan. Did you know textfree is NOT available in Japan? It figures. They would rather comitt “SEPUKU” than allow someone to get something for free.
Thank you Pinger!!

I’m going to Japan tomorrow and ive been having issues figuring out what to do about a cell phone, so I can travel there and use this to talk to my family if they download the app too Right? I’ve been worried about this for some time, if you or anyone can confirm this, it would be appreciated greatly!

Hope I don’t get censored. My other comment .. I critized the author’s bad grammar.
Okay. If you go through NARITA you can rent a sim card for your iphone or other 3 G phone. It’s nice to have a local phone. Umber while you’re there, but data will run you 1,500 yen for 1mb. That’s the max per day. So if you can find wifi (hahaha. Right. Free wifi in japan) (Japan is close to china and everyone knows it might as well be the West Bank. Friggin tight wads). You can’t download Textfree in Japan! If u have minutes you can call the USA.
When speaking English to the natives just speak slowly and clearly. Avoid “wanna, gonna, gotta, because they don’t know those. Twenty-seven yrs there, so…

I like Textfree on my iphone. I use it on the computer a lot though because it’s much faster and more easy to contact your friends. I think that you should have an unblock button instead of having to send them a message. You should also be able to delete messages on the computer using Textfree. If you do achieve this, please leave me an email. Thanks (:

What are you referring to? An “unlock button”??
I use textfree in my MAC as well. Thank you Pinger for offering both methods.

And I wanted to correct another sentence… So if you can get or find wifi you can certainly use text free. Textfree works on 3G as well. What’s your plan, data roaming?? No! Stop! Just get a rental sim from SOFTBANK. There’s another company in Narita that will rent you a pocket wifi for around 1,300/day. It’s your own personal hot spot. If you can get a FON Account, there are many Fon hot spots available.
Wow. I need to start charging. I’m unemployed and good guys finish last.
One more point. The USD has gained a little in the past two weeks, but still 100 is about $1.19 and a can of coke in the wonderful vending machines you’ll see will run anywhere from 120 to 150 yen. No “two for one’s” in Japan. It’s double pay for 1. The truth hurts.
