Today in TechCrunch:
Deutsche Telekom’s VC Firm Makes Strategic Investment In Pinger
“For the last few years we’ve been tracking the growth of a service called Textfree, offered by San Jose-based startup Pinger. As the name implies, Textfree has a very attractive value proposition: you sign up, it gives you a free, real, telephone number, and you can send text messages and make phone calls with it free of charge — the service makes most of its money by displaying ads alongside the texts.
It’s also massively popular: last month alone, users sent and received a total of 2 billion text messages, and it’s one of the most downloaded iOS apps of all time. Even more impressive is the fact that the vast majority of their efforts have been concentrated in the U.S. alone — Pinger is preparing to sweep across Europe this year…”

Is my Pinger the only one that isn’t working right now ?
February 23, 2012 at 10:50 pm
Ive had this app for two years and a half; however it hasn’t been working at all lately and it’s getting pretty annoying. I get a text notification but when I check the text nothing shows up. Another thing it has been crashing a lot and what not. I hope it’s fixed pretty soon or you guys will be losing pingers.
Thanks!

Hi 🙂 To receive pics, just make sure your friends are sending them to your username@textfree.us address. Pics sent to that address should appear in the app just fine!

Pinger is getting bigger, while ads get more repeated and free promotions dissipate. Kinda strange once a company becomes a conglomerate it starts losing focus on what got it there in the first place. Your free minute videos were broken down to limited and are now only upon an ended call. More ads are now displayed than ever before and with calls failing to load because of the slowness of the overall app with over packed ads. Sad to see something that was so clean simple and easy turn to junk overloaded with crap and sometimes even crashing. Lame. Highly lame. 1yr customer. Leaving.

Hi, Joseph. We’re sad to see you go, but appreciate the time you took to send us this feedback. A lot of what you’ve described with ads is out of our control and had to be set up that way due to certain restrictions. Again, we sincerely appreciate your response and are working hard to provide you with the best possible application.

I want to thank Pinger CS for even responding to the negatives. You have always had the best CS hands down. I had went through testing several other name apps. All comparison to pinger but none quite like what pinger is. International free texting is by far the best feature. Keeping in touch with my brother while he’s deployed in the marines has been touching every time I can text him, thank you for a great app. Just wish there was a different way other than bloat ware. Let me just say there is no other free app better than pingers service. Other apps run better but do not have pingers features, and this is because of the abundance of advertising. But you always get what you pay for in this case free. Do not complain because a lot of time goes into keeping it that way. I wipe my feet before I enter a home and this app greets you with open arms as long as you can handle the flaws. I rely to much on neededing it rather than using it for what it has to offer in my case I had to pay for what I have now the MJ free calling app. As I still use pinger to talk to my brother, it just can’t handle calls very well. Nonetheless thank you for what you have to offer and hope a new trend of making money to support things come about so we can clean pinger up and still keep it free. Good luck guys!
